OpenAI's Sponsored Agents Turn ChatGPT Ads Into Conversations

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT — clearly labeled conversations with business-sponsored agents after an ad — plus AI campaign tools and first HubSpot and Shopify integrations.

The ChatGPT ad product stopped being a banner slot on Wednesday. OpenAI introduced a set of AI-powered advertising experiences for ChatGPT Ads, headlined by Sponsored Agents — a test that lets users start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent inside ChatGPT after clicking an ad (OpenAI, Reuters). Alongside it: natural-language campaign creation, AI creative tools in Ads Manager, and the platform's first CRM and ecommerce integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. Eighteen days after OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads crossed a $1 billion annualized run rate, the company is shipping the machinery that ad platforms are actually built on.

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents in the United States on September 16 — after clicking a relevant ad, users can enter a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, separate from ChatGPT's own answers (OpenAI, Reuters).
  • The advertiser stack went AI-native: natural-language campaign creation through an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT, AI-suggested copy and imagery in Ads Manager, and opt-in text customization with automatic translation (OpenAI).
  • HubSpot is OpenAI's first CRM partner and Shopify its first ecommerce partner; US merchants get a free ChatGPT Ads app with Shopify Catalog sync and pixel-based conversion tracking, going international September 23 (OpenAI).
  • Angi is piloting Sponsored Agents for home-services conversations, and Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint are named as early ChatGPT advertisers — with a $500 ad credit on $500 of spend to seed the channel (Business Wire, OpenAI's advertiser page).
  • The ad unit is now a conversation: discovery, qualification and click-through compress into one AI surface, which puts organic GEO and paid placement on the same budget line for the first time.

What Actually Happened

Four launches landed in one announcement, each filling a different hole in the platform.

First, the format: Sponsored Agents. When a relevant ad appears in ChatGPT, the user can choose to enter a clearly labeled conversation with that business's agent. OpenAI's example is a shopper who spots a dining table in an ad and wants to know whether it fits their space, how many people it seats, or how to care for the finish. The conversation is explicitly distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the user's original chat (OpenAI). The test is live with select advertisers in the United States; home-services marketplace Angi says it is among the first brands piloting the format, with an Angi-branded agent appearing in relevant home-services conversations (Business Wire).

Second, the tooling. Advertisers can now create, update and analyze campaigns through natural-language prompts in ChatGPT via an Ads Manager plugin — point it at a website or a brief and it builds the campaign, reports performance and recommends next steps. Inside Ads Manager itself, drafting an ad produces AI-suggested copy and imagery drawn from the advertiser's landing page and campaign objective, with human review before anything is added. A third, opt-in feature adapts existing headlines and descriptions to conversational context and auto-translates ad copy into the user's language (OpenAI).

Third, distribution through tools businesses already use. HubSpot is OpenAI's first CRM partner: from Wednesday, businesses can connect a ChatGPT Ads account and create ads, track performance and follow up on leads without leaving HubSpot. Shopify is the first ecommerce partner: US-based merchants get a free ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store with products already synced through Shopify Catalog, campaigns running on a Shopify pixel with conversion events, and analytics covering spend, click-through rates, conversions and cost per acquisition. The app goes international on September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available (OpenAI, Unite.AI).

Fourth, the funnel-filling: OpenAI's advertiser page names Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint as early advertisers and offers new advertisers $500 in ad credit when they spend $500. A Newegg performance marketing manager, Alec Shao, framed the pitch plainly — being present in ChatGPT while people research purchases builds consideration (Unite.AI). OpenAI also states ads are clearly identified, remain separate from ChatGPT's responses, and that users control how their data is used for ads.

The Ad Unit Is Now a Conversation

Every advertising platform has a base unit. For search it was the sponsored text link. For social it was the promoted post. OpenAI's base unit is now a branded conversation — and that is a bigger structural change than it looks.

The old funnel on an ad platform is split across surfaces: see the ad here, research the product there, buy somewhere else. A Sponsored Agent compresses discovery, qualification and the click-through into a single session. The user asks the brand's agent their real objections — does it fit, how do I clean it, what's the return policy — and the brand answers before the user ever reaches the website. For high-consideration purchases, that is the mid-funnel work a landing page has never done well, happening inside the ad itself.

The design constraint OpenAI keeps repeating is separation: sponsored conversations are labeled, separate from ChatGPT's own answers, and separate from the user's original thread. This is the same wall Google built between ads and organic results — and for the same reason. The assistant's value is the trust in its answers. If sponsored content bleeds into the model's independent responses, users defect and the whole surface devalues. OpenAI is betting it can sell access to the conversation without contaminating the answer layer. Angi's pilot is the early test of whether users will actually talk to a branded agent when the label is honest.

Note who is not in the first cohort of sponsored-agent pilots: no announcement of Amazon or other large marketplaces piloting the conversational format. Business Insider reported in June that Amazon had started buying ChatGPT ads while limiting what data OpenAI could access about its shoppers — incumbents will rent the channel without feeding it. Expect the early conversational-ad cohort to be brands that need demand generation more than they fear platform dependence: home services, retail electronics, printing, furniture.

From Run Rate to Rails: The Platform Play

The sequencing here is the story. On August 31, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue in under 200 days, with self-serve buying opening across India, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Reuters, Forbes). That was demand arriving faster than the tooling. Sixteen days later, OpenAI shipped the tooling: AI campaign creation, creative generation, two platform integrations and a credit program. That is ad-platform maturity on a compressed clock — Meta and Google took years to move from ad units to self-serve rails to CRM integrations. OpenAI is doing it in under a month, which tells you how much of the playbook it is importing wholesale from the incumbents' playbooks.

The integration strategy matters more than the AI tools. "Adopting a new advertising channel shouldn't require businesses to rebuild the way they work" is OpenAI's own framing, and the HubSpot and Shopify integrations are the operational version of it: the platform meets advertisers inside their existing workflow, with their existing data doing the setup work. Shopify Catalog means a merchant's products are already structured for ads; HubSpot context means lead follow-up is already wired. Every step of friction removed widens the funnel of small advertisers — and small advertisers are where ad platforms compound. KFC India was already advertising inside ChatGPT by September 13, per IBTimes, which gives you a sense of how fast brands are moving into whatever inventory exists.

For the competitive picture: Alphabet's ad business is the visible target, and the market repriced a slice of it when the $1 billion run rate landed in August — Alphabet gave up roughly 2.7% that day. But the quieter contest is with the platforms where ad budgets actually live. A HubSpot integration is a wedge into the marketing-ops stack; a Shopify app with pixel and conversion events is a wedge into commerce measurement. Both are tables Meta and Google sit at too. The differentiator OpenAI is betting on: the ads run next to a conversational surface where purchase intent is expressed in the user's own words, which is targeting data no clickstream can replicate.

What This Does to Search Economics

For years, the GEO conversation — optimizing content to surface in AI-generated answers — was an organic-only discipline. Wednesday closes that era. There is now a paid lane inside the same conversational surface, with labeled sponsored agents sitting one click from organic answers, plus conversion tracking to make the spend accountable.

Three things follow. First, AI search gets an auction-adjacent market: limited inventory, named early advertisers, signup credits — the classic land-grant phase of a new ad channel, priced cheap while it lasts. Second, measurement is arriving faster than it did for most new channels; the Shopify app's cost-per-acquisition reporting means merchants can compare ChatGPT ads against their Meta and Google baselines from day one, and the channel will be judged on CPA, not impressions. Third, the organic and paid lanes interact: a brand whose content already surfaces in ChatGPT answers has warmer soil for its sponsored presence, and brands absent from both are absent from the fastest-growing discovery surface on the internet.

What is still unknown: user tolerance. OpenAI says it is taking a measured approach focused on trust, and the separation rules are real. But conversational ads put a pitch inside the product people use for thinking out loud. If Sponsored Agents feel like a salesperson interrupting a private conversation, usage data will say so quickly — and the measured rollout with select US advertisers is how OpenAI buys the option to pull back.

What Builders Should Take From It

  • The channel is testable with trivial downside right now. $500 spend gets $500 in credit, Shopify and HubSpot integrations remove most setup work, and CPA reporting ships in the app. If you run acquisition for a product, a small structured test this quarter — one campaign, clean conversion tracking, CPA benchmarked against your existing channels — is the cheapest market intelligence available.
  • GEO and paid AI placement are now one budget conversation. Your organic visibility in AI answers and your ability to buy conversations in the same surface are complements. Audit what ChatGPT says about your category — then decide whether paid presence adds reach or just buys clicks your content already earns.
  • If you're on Shopify or HubSpot, the rails are already built for you. Catalog sync, pixel, conversion events, in-dashboard management. The integration cost that usually kills new-channel tests has been deliberately engineered away. That is rare in year one of an ad platform — use it.
  • Conversational ads are a product surface, not just a media buy. The brand's agent is the ad. If you pilot Sponsored Agents, the agent's answers, tone and honesty are your creative — a bad scripted agent in a labeled conversation does more brand damage than no ad at all.
  • Watch the separation rules as the tell. OpenAI is publicly staking trust on sponsored conversations being distinct from ChatGPT's answers. If that wall erodes — sponsored content creeping into independent responses — the channel's core asset degrades, and so should your assumption about bidding on it.

The ads story so far has been about scale: run rates, expansion markets, revenue timelines. Wednesday was about infrastructure — the tools, integrations and format that make an ad platform an economy rather than a billboard. The $1 billion run rate said ChatGPT Ads is real. Sponsored Agents say OpenAI intends for it to be where commerce conversations happen, not just where banners rotate. For builders selling anything online, the practical move is the same either way: test small, measure CPA honestly, and own your agent's voice before the market does.
